Spring Term 2023/24

Topic – Coastline

In the Coastline project, your child will use maps to learn about the location of the world’s seas and oceans and keys to learn about map symbols. They will also find out about the directions on a compass. They will learn about the human and physical features of a coastline, including the effects of erosion and how to stay safe when visiting the coast.

They will have the opportunity to learn about the work of the RNLI, what happened to the SS Rohilla and about the coastal town of Whitby, including how Captain Cook is linked to the town.

Autumn Term 2023/24

Topic – Movers and Shakers

In the Movers and Shakers project, your child will learn five statements from Dawson’s model that will help them identify people who are historically significant and use the words year, decade and century to describe dates and times. They will study the life and impact of a significant person in the locality and of 10 significant individuals from around the world. They will complete in-depth studies of significant explorers Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, and significant activists Emmeline Pankhurst and Rosa Parks and think carefully about the impact of their actions. The children will also carry out an independent study of a significant person from the past and learn about people who are significant today. They will also learn how significant people are commemorated and design a memorial for a person they have studied.

Summer Term 2022/23

Topic – Beachcombers

FS2 & KS1 Cornerstones Project – Beachcombers, combining – Who lives in a rock pool? | Barmby on the Marsh

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside. Do you? That’s good, because you’re about to become an expert beachcomber. Head to your nearest beach to look for interesting and unusual objects, using your senses to spot, sniff and seek them out. Have you seen the rock pools yet? We can take a peek into the cool water to learn about the weird and wonderful animals and plants in their microhabitats. Maybe we can kick back in a deckchair and do a little reading. What’s your favourite book about the seashore? Let’s invent an amazing rock pool resident. What features will it need to survive happily in its watery habitat? Make a 3-D model of your plant or creature. Got your shorts and sunglasses on? Bucket and spade at the ready? Let’s get beachcombing.

Spring Term 2022/2023

Topic – Wriggle & Crawl

Put on your coat and wellies and let’s head outside on a minibeast hunt.

This term, we’ll head to a wetland or woodland to identify minibeasts in their natural habitat. We’ll write a guide book for other children to use on a minibeast hunt, draw sketch maps of our minibeast hunting area and create minibeast stories and poems. Heading out into the local area, we’ll explore trees and bushes to see what lives there, investigate how far and how fast a snail can travel and create a minibeast habitat of our own. We’ll draw delicate sketches of minibeasts, make models from a variety of materials and use microscopes to observe minibeasts up close. Our ICT skills will help us create a minibeast animation and we’ll create a PowerPoint presentation to share what we have learnt.

Help your child prepare for their project

Minibeasts are fascinating. Why not have a minibeast hunt around your local area? Look out for different minibeasts, take close-up photos and use an app or spotting book to identify any unknown creatures. Alternatively, visit a local museum to see if they have any insect specimens on display. Huge moths, colourful butterflies and armoured beetles are all amazing to see. You could also invent minibeasts of your own. Draw, paint or make models of new minibeasts, then give them a name and describe their special features.

Autumn Term 2022/2023

Topic – Towers, Tunnels and Turrets

See the castle ahead? Get ready to invade its mighty walls. Shoot a projectile with an archer’s aim. Head across the drawbridge, over the moat and up to the top of the tower.

Meet Rapunzel who lives in a tall, tall tower. Let’s build a brand new one. Whose is the tallest? Can you measure it?

Then dig deep, deep down, making burrows and tunnels, just like the animals who live underground.

What’s that sound? I hear little hooves going trip, trap, trip, trap, over the rickety bridge. Watch out for the angry troll underneath. He likes to gobble up little girls and boys. Make sure your bridge is sturdy enough to take our weight and get us safely to the other side.

And finally, meet three little pigs who need your help to build a strong fortress. Inside its strong walls, they’ll be safe from the big, bad wolf. No huffing and puffing will blow your fortress down.
